Each of the seven schools, which include; All Saints’ Academy, Cheltenham College, The Dean Academy, Dean Close School, Gloucester Academy, Lakers School and Pate’s Grammar School, has signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

All of the schools who have pledged their support to the Armed Forces community have Combined Cadet Force units, which form part of the extra-curricular activities offered to students.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a public pledge to ensure that no member of the Armed Forces Community should face disadvantage in the provision of public and commercial services, and should in some cases be entitled to special treatment, especially in the case of the injured or bereaved.

The Armed Forces Community is made up of service leavers and veterans, wounded, injured and sick, Reservists, service spouses and the Cadet Forces.

Representatives from each of the seven supportive schools were presented with Bronze ERS certificates by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, at a small ceremony which took place at the Cheltenham Park Hotel.

Jon Beake, Regional Employer Engagement Director at Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, who works with business to deliver the Armed Forces Covenant in the South West, said; “It is fantastic to be able to officially recognise the support that these seven Gloucestershire schools have pledged as part of the Armed Forces Covenant.

“They have all demonstrated support to various parts of the Armed Forces community, especially the Cadets, and as Covenant signatories they richly deserve their Bronze Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Award. I look forward to seeing some of them reaching Silver in future and welcome other businesses, schools and charities to get involved.”

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support Defence and inspire others to do the same.  The scheme encompasses bronze, silver and gold awards for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to Defence and the Armed Forces Community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme was launched by the Prime Minister in July 2014 and 43 employers based in the South West have so far been presented with a Silver Award with 81 .
