LOCAL CADET RECOGNISED FOR CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY

05.05.2013

Andrew Walsh, 17, a member of the Thornbury Army Cadet Force (ACF) Bristol has received special recognition for his services to the community.

The Mayor of Thornbury’s Youth Award is an annual award ceremony launched to recognise young people in the community who give their own time and effort in supporting and assisting individuals, charities and projects. Those entered are nominated by representatives of the clubs or organisations that they are involved with.

Andrew has been a member of the Thornbury ACF for over three years, and has already achieved the rank of Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM). To reach this level in such a small space of time requires a considerable amount of hard work and dedication.

Throughout his time in the ACF, Andrew has qualified in First Aid and is currently undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh’s award at silver level. He is also currently studying A-levels at The Castle School 6th Form College with ambitions to study medicine at university.

Speaking of Andrew’s success, Chris Starbuck, CEO of the Bristol ACF comments: “Andrew’s special commendation at the Mayor’s Youth Award was thoroughly deserved. He is an active member within the cadet unit, instructing junior members of the organisations through all levels of training.

“His enthusiasm and dedication sets a great example to other cadets, and his contribution has had a significant effect on the success of the unit and the progress of its members.”

Those nominated recently attended a ceremony at Thornbury Town Hall, where Andrew received his special commendation. The Mayor of Thornbury, Cllr Phyllida Parsloe, commented on the awards: “A number of exceptional young people are nominated for the awards every year.

“Andrew’s commitment to the Army Cadet Force, involvement in charities such as The British Legion, and assistance in the Thornbury Carnival and the Bristol Half Marathon, makes his achievement fully merited.”
