Able Seaman Leon Collis from HMS Flying Fox in Bristol spent Armed Forces Day as one of the military stewards at the All England Tennis Championships, Wimbledon.
Leon is a member of the Royal Navy Reserves Logistics branch and in his civilian life runs Collistear beauty salon with his wife Caroline in Sea Mills, Bristol.
This is his second year at Wimbledon as a steward, which he describes as “an incredible experience … I wouldn’t get this opportunity unless I was in the RNR.”
Leon added: “I had a deep a sense of pride doing the work on Armed Forces Day in my uniform, if I wasn’t here in Wimbledon I’d be in Bristol supporting Flying Fox in rig. I’ve been in the RNR for five years and really enjoyed it.”
Leon has deployed to Exercise Joint Warrior three times in his trade ‘Logistics’ job; this exercise occurs twice a year and involves a large NATO contingent who conduct training that prepares them for ongoing contingency preparation anywhere in the world.
He also worked during Operation Olympics in 2012 where he was involved in general security work.
Leon is among a rapidly growing, new generation in the Royal Navy Reserves and HMS Flying Fox is welcoming more recruits into the Ship’s company.
