Cadets navigate the Solent in a Tall Ships Challenge
Story by HQ South West
Ten Army Cadets from across the southwest region and two Cadet Force Adult Volunteers have enjoyed a six-day sailing expedition aboard Challenger 1, navigating the Solent and south coast of England as part of their Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew training.
The journey, which began in Portsmouth included stops in Cowes, Portland, Weymouth and Yarmouth and offered hands-on experience in seamanship, navigation, and teamwork. Throughout the week, cadets practiced essential skills such as man overboard drills, anchoring, knot tying, and tender handling. Despite varying wind conditions, they demonstrated resilience and enthusiasm throughout the duration of their expedition. The voyage concluded with the presentation of RYA certificates, marking a successful and inspiring chapter in their maritime journey.
Reflecting on the expedition’s impact, the cadets and their mentors highlight the profound benefits of this unique experience. The journey not only enhances their technical sailing abilities but also fosters personal growth, resilience, and teamwork. In addition to the cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers achieving their Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew qualification they also achieved sections of their Army Cadets syllabus training in adventurous training and their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award residential.
Captain Matthew Sanders, Regional Adventurous Training and Navigation Advisor, Headquarters Southwest said “On behalf of our cadets and adults from the Army Cadet Force, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to The Tall Ships Youth Trust for delivering an unforgettable expedition. This extraordinary experience provided our young participants with the opportunity to forge new friendships, enhance their skills, and immerse themselves in an exciting new activity. Every individual involved walked away enriched, inspired, and deeply appreciative of this remarkable journey.
He continues “The Army Cadet Force is committed to providing opportunities for young people to explore the world of sailing and develop valuable life skills. We look forward to many more successful expeditions in the future, continuing to empower and inspire the next generation of sailors.”
Helping to make this trip possible Headquarters Southwest has received financial support from ACCT UK, Ulysses Trust and from Wessex RFCA. Their invaluable support underscores the importance of providing young cadets with enriching and educational experiences not just on land but at sea as well!
