About Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association
What do we do?
Wessex RFCA is an independent, statutory body that supports and champions the UK’s Reserve Forces, Cadet organisations, and Armed Forces community across the South West, including Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, and the Channel Islands.
We strengthen ties between the military and local communities through estate management, engagement, youth development via the cadet forces, and advocacy for Reservists.

Reserve Forces
Reservists dedicate their spare time to serving in the Reserve Forces, balancing civilian careers with military responsibilities to ensure they are ready to serve their country when needed. The training, skills, and experiences they gain not only enhance their military readiness but also contribute to improved performance in the workplace. Wessex RFCA supports the Reserve Forces in numerous ways, including maintaining facilities, providing welfare support, and assisting with recruitment efforts.
Cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers
Wessex RFCA plays a vital role in supporting the Cadet Forces across the South West, providing essential administrative, logistical, and compliance support. This includes managing resources, safeguarding, and ensuring that facilities and equipment are maintained to the highest standards. Through the Cadet Forces, young people gain invaluable life skills, such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and resilience, all while participating in exciting outdoor activities and training. The Cadets offer a structured environment where young people can build confidence, develop new interests, and unlock their potential, making a positive impact on their future personal and professional lives. Estate Management
From 1 August 2024, significant changes to the delivery of Hard Facilities Management (Hard FM) across the RFCA Volunteer Estate came into effect, with services now incorporated into the Future Defence Infrastructure Services (FDIS) and delivered through the Ministry of Defence Built Estate contracts. In the South West, these services are provided by Regional Prime Contractor VIVO Defence Services. Wessex RFCA continues to play a key role in supporting and sustaining the estate, working closely with VIVO to ensure high standards are maintained. The Wessex RFCA Estates team is responsible for assuring the quality and effectiveness of VIVO’s work, overseeing areas such as fault reporting, statutory inspections and testing, repairs, condition surveys, and ensuring value for money. This partnership helps ensure that facilities across the region remain safe, efficient, and fit for purpose for both Reservists and Cadets.

Finance
Wessex RFCA receives its funding through the Council of RFCAs from central government, complemented by regionally generated income. This local income supports a range of key activities including estate development, community engagement, welfare grants to units, and the core work of supporting the Reserve Forces and Cadets across the region. Engagement
Wessex RFCA leads on community and employer engagement across the South West, building strong, lasting relationships between the Armed Forces and the wider public. Through targeted communications, support for the Armed Forces Covenant, and delivery of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), Wessex RFCA promotes understanding and support for the Reserve Forces and Cadet organisations. By working closely with local businesses, civic leaders, and community groups, the Association enhances awareness of defence activity, encourages employer support for Reservists, and strengthens the Armed Forces’ presence within the region.
