Estates Department Summer 2026 News Update

Whilst there is never enough money to go around, the team are conducting lots of activity to ensure all our sites are safe and compliant.  Now our Industry Partner Vivo has additional workforce to focus on billable and remedial work we have seen a significant improvement in compliance statistics and the speed of repair work across the VE.

The disposal of Dorset House (former Royal Marine Reserve HQ) in Bristol continues, a closure risk assessment is currently being conducted. This will give the Maritime Reserve an idea of the work that is required in order for this property to be sold. The disposal receipt from Dorset House will directly fund the upgrades required at HMS Flying Fox now the RMR has relocated from Dorset House.

Chancellors Farm on the Mendips has just been sold to Somerset Wildlife Trust, which is fantastic as they will continue their amazing work in protecting and restoring Somerset’s landscape and wildlife. Now that Yoxter training area has been taken back from Defence Training Estates (DTE) and is under WxRFCA control, the funds from the sale of Chancellors Farm will aid in the modernisation of the accomodation and facilities on offer.

In Wiltshire there are three sites being refurbished for the Royal Air Force Cadets; Melksham, Chippenham and Old Sarum. The Army Cadet hut in Melksham is also seeing a facelift. Hopefully being completed in early autumn, these improved sites will serve as a great space for our young people to develop and learn new skills.

We have recently carried out an IOSH course for the Estates team and Professional Support Staff. The course was a great success and we will look to carry out another course soon to maintain our professional development. In addition, time has been dedicated to reviewing and updating several policies including the vehicle policy, risk management and safe working to ensure they remain current. We have also continued to maintain and upgrade our vehicle fleet to support operational efficiency and ensure the fleet continues to meet service needs.

Our Health, Safety and Environmental Protection lead has been working hard to assure our renewed Safety Management System is understood and is being implemented across the workforce. There have been a series of online webinars and bespoke face to face working groups to ensure our workforce are fully conversant with all delivery aspects of safe working. We continue to assure we are providing a safe space for our customers and employees.
