46 Cadets from Gloucestershire ACF, St Edward’s School CCF and Cheltenham College CCF have taken part in Exercise Ski Cadet in the Tirol region in Austria. Many of the Cadets were complete novices while some were taking part for the third or fourth time. The Exercise was over spring half term and they stayed near St Jacob and skied in three areas including St Johann and Steinplatte. The snow conditions were fantastic again this year and so all the Cadets were able to really get the ‘skiing bug’!
The Cadets were accompanied by 24 Adults from their units including Gloucestershire ACF Commandant Colonel Paul Saunders. 7 of the Adult Instructors gained basic ski instructor qualifications so they will in due course be able to teach and lead Cadet ski groups. Gloucestershire ACF successfully applied for a Wessex RFCA Special Projects Grant which helped to fund this fantastic opportunity for the Cadets.
The Exercise is organised by the Cadet Executive Officer of Gloucestershire ACF Major Alec Masson who commented: ‘This is the 15th Exercise Ski Cadet that I have organised and the 6th and largest one to date involving Cadets from Gloucestershire. Hundreds of Cadets have taken part over the years and gained basic skiing qualifications. This is a key part of our Cadet Experience and planning is already under way for the next one in 2019!’
