Opportunities for University Students in the South West

University students can access exciting leadership and development opportunities via the University Royal Naval Units (URNU), University Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC), and University Air Squadrons (UAS), each offering a unique insight into military life alongside academic studies.

University Royal Naval Unit (URNU)

Under the command of Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), these are two URNUs in the South West, at Devon and Bristol. They give students hands-on experience of Royal Navy life. Officer Cadets gain leadership, teamwork, and organisational skills through training at sea, adventurous activities, and social events.

University Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC)

UOTCs offer students the chance to develop transferable skills, take part in military and adventurous training, enjoy sports and a vibrant social scene, all while being paid. There’s no obligation to join the Army after graduation. There are UOTCs in both Bristol and Exeter.

University Air Squadron (UAS)

The Bristol University Air Squadron (BUAS) provides flying training and leadership development to students with an interest in the Royal Air Force. Alongside flying, students take part in adventurous training, sports, and social activities.
