Truro school recognised for Armed Forces support

Penair Secondary School has received a Silver Employer Recognition Scheme Award in recognition of the support it offers to the Armed Forces Community in the local community.

Penair has worked hard to build relationships with RAF St Mawgan, as well as local Army and Air Cadet Units. Staff at the school are actively encouraged to engage with charity fundraising for the Royal British Legion and other service charities. Throughout the year.

The school was nominated for the Silver Employer Recognition Scheme Award by Squadron Leader Les Tanner, who assisted them with the establishment of their relatively new Combined Cadet Force contingent.

The school currently employs two ex-military personnel, one was previously a Reservist and the other a Regular, both serving in the Royal Air Force. They also have five Cadet Force Adult Volunteers working within the RAF section of their Combined Cadet Force Unit (CCF).

CCF detachment Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Emily Cook, received the award from Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Edward Bolitho, during a ceremony held at the Alverton Manor in Truro.

The Employer Recognition Scheme was launched to reward employers who support Defence People objectives and encourage others to do the same. This includes employing serving and former members of the Armed Forces community, and demonstrating flexibility towards training and mobilisation commitments for Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

Commenting on the announcement of the 2018 Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Awards, Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans, the Rt Hon Tobias Ellwood MP, said:

“I am delighted to congratulate the recipients of this year’s Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Awards. A Silver award recognises the fantastic efforts of employers throughout the UK who have both elevated their commitments under the Armed Forces Covenant and provided actual benefit to the Armed Forces Community. The winners should all be proud of the life-changing impact and fresh opportunities they are providing to our Reservists, veterans, wounded injured and sick and their families. We’ve seen a record number of winners this year, which shows that the Armed Forces family talent pool is also providing tangible business benefit.”
